Paper-Machine-Headbox-Effect

Headbox is the first section of a paper machine in papermaking process. It is quite significant for paper quality, since the fluid flow in headbox can determine the fiber orientation and basis weight profiles of finished paper.

The headbox can be several meters wide in the cross machine direction, while it has a contraction ratio(inlet area to outlet area) of ten or more in a streamwise length of less than a meter. A dilute concentratin of pulp fibers in water flows steadily through the headbox. One of its function is to provide a discharge of stock (fibers & other substance influid suspension) at its outlet that is uniform in both the machien direction and across the width of the paper web. The stock is fed onto the forming section through a slice opening.

In oder to get good paper formation, It should not occur fiber flocculation in the jet exiting the headbox. Fibers must also be evenly distributed. Therefore, in the cross direction of paper machine, slurry of headbox should have a minimal average speed. At the same time, in oder to prevent fiber flocculation, the maintenance of high intensity turbulence within the stock is required in headbox designs.
